Meet Sue Gallion, KC Children’s Author at a Special StoryTime Event

Come celebrate with local kid’s author Sue Lowell Gallion as she shares her new book “Pug Meets Pig” at our Corinth Square store on October 1st at 10:30am!

Pup Meets PigWe’re smitten with this sweet and silly story about a darling duo celebrating the timeless themes of embracing change, being kind to others, and finding friends in unlikely places.

Local childen’s writer Sue Lowell Gallion’s first book is about to hit the shelf and we couldn’t be happier to celebrate with this Leawood author!

Join us Saturday, October 1st, 2016 as we welcome Sue Gallion for story reading, coloring and book signing.

Meet local children’s Author Sue Lowell Gallion!

Sue Lowell Gallion’s debut picture book Pug Meets Pig charmed us from page one! We’re tickled to know there’s a second Pug and Pig book already on its way for next summer, Pug and Pig Trick or Treat.

Although this is Sue’s first book she’s no newcomer to children’s writing and literature. Sue’s stories, poems, and activity rhymes have been published in children’s magazines including Highlights and High Five. She is active in the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and is the regional advisor for the Kansas region.

We were lucky enough to chat with Sue recently to learn more about her…Sue Lowell Gallion, children's book author

Tell us a little bit about you and this project:

Well, people seem surprised that I don’t have a pug (or a pig!) Our dog now is a black lab mix named Tucker. We got him as a puppy from Wayside Waifs. He’s 7 now but he’s got lots of energy, so you’ll find me walking the trails, the neighborhood, or at the dog park.

The world of traditional children’s publishing is a lot more complicated than I thought when I started seriously writing for kids about 10 years ago.  I actually sold this manuscript three years ago, which is a pretty quick release for a picture book.

What are your favorite things about living in KC?

I’m a third generation Kansas Citian, so I have many favorite things about my home town! I love the varied landscape, the seasons and the friendly Midwestern people. Some of my favorite landmarks are Union Station (I remember picking up my grandparents there when they traveled by train,) the Kansas City Zoo, Kauffman Gardens, and the Overland Park Farmer’s Market.

What are your thoughts about kids and the importance of books and reading?

I’m a big proponent of reading aloud to kids from birth on. I think it’s a magic time for a child with a parent or any adult, and many studies show that it’s a huge factor in kids’ development. I’d love to see a movement among today’s parents that read aloud time is a time to put all devices away. No interruptions, just focused time together.

Today is considered another “golden age” of picture books. The art is amazing. There are so many wonderful picture books with heart and humor, both fiction and nonfiction. I’d encourage grandparents and parents not to just turn to the old classics, as special as they are. And I always encourage people to buy books locally whenever they can!

Sister Team Wins the Best Booth Contest at The Kids Flea Market

Sister Team Wins Best Booth Award at Flea MarketSister Team Wins the Best Booth Contest!

The rain stayed away and it was a beautiful morning for the 8th Annual Kid’s Flea Market.
Thank you to our amazing community for coming out for this event! The parking lot and sidewalks in front of Corinth Learning Tree were buzzing with young salespeople eager to sell their outgrown toys and books.
Great Harvest Bread Co. was flipping complimentary pancakes under their tent. Families were creative this year. Booths were decorated with handmade signs and there were delicious homemade treats. One multi-generational family set up a very professional lemonade stand complete with signs and aprons as part of their double booth.
Registered families participated in the first ever, Best Booth Contest this year. Annabelle and Adeline, a sister team, were chosen as the winners of a $25 Learning Tree gift Certificate and an “insiders tour” of the store for their booth design.

We had the chance to interview David recently…

Meet author/illustrator Daniel Miyares:

How did this book come to be?

Surf’s Up was Kwame’s idea to start with. My artist rep contacted me and asked if I would give this manuscript a read. They said it was a story about two frog friends. One wants to get to the beach but the other just wants to read his book. It was a dialogue driven story, but I immediately began imagining who these characters were and what their adventure was going to be. Kwame infused them with such personality. I knew it was going to be a fun one.

How did you end up in KC and what is your favorite thing about living in KC?

I was born and raised in South Carolina. I studied illustration at Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL. After college I got a job working for Hallmark Cards, Inc. as an illustrator so off I went to the middle of the map!

What are your thoughts about kids and the importance of books and reading?

I was reminded pretty quickly after becoming a father that children look at the world with an amazing sense of wonder. I try my best each day to see things the way my children do. My daughter has recently become a really good reader. Watching her progress through those stages and seeing each light bulb go off along the way has been such a joy. Reading makes anything possible.

What’s family life like at your house?

It’s not uncommon for impromptu family dance parties to break out in our kitchen. We like to boogie.

Visit Daniel Miyares’ website to learn more.
