Kwik Sticks are our favorite twist-up paints. These quick dry easy-to-use paint sticks work beautifully on eggs. Add colorful stripes, dots or any creative designs to eggs. Dries in seconds!

Meet Sue Gallion, KC Children’s Author at a Special StoryTime Event

Come celebrate with local kid’s author Sue Lowell Gallion as she shares her new book “Pug Meets Pig” at our Corinth Square store on October 1st at 10:30am!

Pup Meets PigWe’re smitten with this sweet and silly story about a darling duo celebrating the timeless themes of embracing change, being kind to others, and finding friends in unlikely places.

Local childen’s writer Sue Lowell Gallion’s first book is about to hit the shelf and we couldn’t be happier to celebrate with this Leawood author!

Join us Saturday, October 1st, 2016 as we welcome Sue Gallion for story reading, coloring and book signing.

Meet local children’s Author Sue Lowell Gallion!

Sue Lowell Gallion’s debut picture book Pug Meets Pig charmed us from page one! We’re tickled to know there’s a second Pug and Pig book already on its way for next summer, Pug and Pig Trick or Treat.

Although this is Sue’s first book she’s no newcomer to children’s writing and literature. Sue’s stories, poems, and activity rhymes have been published in children’s magazines including Highlights and High Five. She is active in the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and is the regional advisor for the Kansas region.

We were lucky enough to chat with Sue recently to learn more about her…Sue Lowell Gallion, children's book author

Tell us a little bit about you and this project:

Well, people seem surprised that I don’t have a pug (or a pig!) Our dog now is a black lab mix named Tucker. We got him as a puppy from Wayside Waifs. He’s 7 now but he’s got lots of energy, so you’ll find me walking the trails, the neighborhood, or at the dog park.

The world of traditional children’s publishing is a lot more complicated than I thought when I started seriously writing for kids about 10 years ago.  I actually sold this manuscript three years ago, which is a pretty quick release for a picture book.

What are your favorite things about living in KC?

I’m a third generation Kansas Citian, so I have many favorite things about my home town! I love the varied landscape, the seasons and the friendly Midwestern people. Some of my favorite landmarks are Union Station (I remember picking up my grandparents there when they traveled by train,) the Kansas City Zoo, Kauffman Gardens, and the Overland Park Farmer’s Market.

What are your thoughts about kids and the importance of books and reading?

I’m a big proponent of reading aloud to kids from birth on. I think it’s a magic time for a child with a parent or any adult, and many studies show that it’s a huge factor in kids’ development. I’d love to see a movement among today’s parents that read aloud time is a time to put all devices away. No interruptions, just focused time together.

Today is considered another “golden age” of picture books. The art is amazing. There are so many wonderful picture books with heart and humor, both fiction and nonfiction. I’d encourage grandparents and parents not to just turn to the old classics, as special as they are. And I always encourage people to buy books locally whenever they can!
